Re: Has this been an "average" honey flow?

This year has been a great dissapointment as far as the honey flow goes.
At this point I expect to get about 1/3 of the honey that I should be getting.
I would be interested to hear what other's experiences are this year.

Re: Moving Hives

Have moved hives successfully every year for the past 10.
I recommend not screening the bees in and moving them at night.
The only 2 meltdowns I ever had were screened in.

Re: splits

Carl Huffman seems to be having the same problem that I am and is offering to do the the same with his bees. Carl has all Russian's and will provide splits in your equipment with a laying queen after 4 weeks. Carl is ready to split immediately so give him a call. 336-706-1777 or email - carl(at)elec...

splits

My bees are growing at such a rapid pace I have been making splits for the last couple of weeks. I will continue to do this until I run out of equipment (which is soon). I plan on selling some splits. Here is the plan. I will make splits directly into your equipment. Since no queens are available ri...

Re: Dead Queen

Rob: But providing bees for the club is one of the best parts of being president! You are correct in saying that we have no real understanding about the handling etc... after delivery to the buyers. And the club should not bear any responsibility. As you indicated the producer did acknowledge the at...

Re: Dead Queen

Still not convinced that the Apiary does not have some responsibility. What else could Bill have possibly done differently to keep the queen alive? I do not think checking her after 3 days killed her. I have obviously done my fair share of queen installations and have only had 1 die in the cage that...

Re: Dead Queen

Have Rob contact the package suppliers.
I believe that they have responsibility for the queens health and death since she never made it out of the cage.

Re: Package bee installation

I successfully overwintered 50 hives on screened bottom boards after having started with around 52. If there is a concern about cold weather you can always slip a board in underneath. Cold does not kill... well OK, I suppose that if you got the bees really cold it might not help them. Honey bees are...

If you purchase, spend a few extra dollars and send to state for fumigation if there is any concern at all.

I just stumbled across the fact that ABJ now has an Electronic version of their journal.

swarming

Started additional inspections yesterday. These inspections included reversals, combinations, removal of extra boxes, feeding of pollen patties and adding additional boxes if needed. Oh yeah, and verification of the queen and eggs/brood. To my surprise and displeasure, I found swarm cells in one of ...

If I had a queenless hive I would combine. While queens may be readily available in March I would question wether or not they would accept a queen after such a long queenless period. ( I just hate losing a $25 queen) Combination will bolster your weakest colony with the potential to split later. Com...

For those of you who have 20+ hours of time with nothing better to do, I highly recommend this lecture. I was originally taught by Dr. Ambrose when I first started beekeeping. His techniques and building blocks for understanding bees and beekeeping are quite impressive. I even found him to be right ...

Assuming that you are going to use it again soon, you can just store it in an outbuilding. We should get a couple more freezing days at which time move the equipment from outside to inside (non-heated). Wax moths are not usually a problem until about mid-April to early May if stored in this manner. ...

generally speaking

I have had the oportunity to observe many behaviors over the years of bees doing things that are not suuposed to do according to the books. Of course we teach one thing and they do something else. It is always fun to learn something new. Last Saturday I fed many of my bees. I only use top feeders. I...

Good thoughts on both posts. To expand... I like to treat as early as possible but am constrained to waiting until all my honey is off. This often puts my treatments off until mid August. My treatments are within the guidelines of what is called out by Apiguard. WHen I first chose to use Apiguard I ...

NO question

Went through all 52 hives Saturday. 1 dead out, 51 alive and thriving but..... 9 years ago, I decided to go away from hard chemicals and move towards organic/natural treaments. I treat each year with Apiguard. I have had some concerns and decided to do a little experiment last year. Experiment as fo...

I have just caught up on this entertaining post. There is one area of top bar vs. Langstroth that has not been discussed and that most simply put is "success rate". I have kept bees in top bar hives as well as Langstroth. I also know others that have extensive experience keeping bees in to...
