Re: Small Hive Beetles
Sun is the cure. I have one outyard that I have had nothing but trouble with for years due to being in complete shade. I have also had a few hives completely destroyed by SHB. One hive drove the bees out without a queen and they absconded. When I picked up the frames they rained out SHB. Often in my...

How do these things happen?
I made 10 splits the other day and requeened 3 days later. I like to manually release my queens so I went back yesterday to take care of it in the rain. I have a beach umbrella that I use for shelter so it really wasnt too bad. I went to go into one of my splits and noticed that the queen cage (JZBZ...

Re: Local Feeding Schedule
Quentin: You stated that you fed about 150 gallons to 2 hives? Is this a typo? I dont feed that much to the 60 hives I have all year long. Second question... You sy that you removed honey? Have you been feeding all during the flow? If so then your honey is adulterated and should not be used for anyt...

I have not noticed any significant bridge comb! I have noticed that they have not capped the frames as much as I would have liked.

Re: super empty
Probably caused by a swarm but unlikely in the last couple of weeks. I believe that most swarming stopped 4 weeks ago.
Any sign of swarm cells?
Keep a close watch in case something happened to it and the queen did not make it back.

Re: buckfast bee
No one that I am aware of.
Jerry Isley used to fool with the Buckfast if my memory serves me correctly. Jerry says that they are fine for the first generation but once superceded or swawrmed and requeened they can become quite mean.

Re: nucs
The nucs have all been sold! I would like to make a few comments about nucs. From my experience, a proper nuc should should contain minimum of 3 frames of brood, and one frame each of honey and pollen with some room to spare for the queen to lay without causing a swarm. The queen should be prolific ...

Re: two questions
Ron: I am unfamiliar with the English garden hives and can not speak with any experience about ants in them. Over all this year I have not seen an increase in ant activity. Iwill say however that certain inner covers and telescoping tops seem to attract ants more so than others. A good strong colony...

Re: How often to inspect?
No one mentioned that inspection of bees does not cause swarming. In fact it would be just the opposite if done correctly. Honeybees normally only swarm early spring through the honey flow. If brood congestion becomes an issue and the queen does not have adequte space to lay, then swarming will ensu...

small swarm
Caught a softball size swarm in one of my yards the other day. An after swarm from one that I thought was in the process of stabilizing and requeening itself. Of course when I looked in I saw almost no bees. This hive for some reason had swarmed itself to death. I have not had this happen in a while...

I often see mother and daughter laying quite literally side by side. Astonishing but true.

Re: Crimson Clover
Obviously we are in for some honey flow surprises this year.
Several of my hives are making quanities of honey in the brood area and one of my hives is drawing comb and storing the surplus honey.
I just hope we dont miss the flow this season. I may be supering up earlier than usual.

truck swarm
In the process of checking my hives and making splits, I left some boxes with drawn comb in the truck bed for next day use. Of course I put a cover on it and to my surprise the next day as I drove from home yard to out yard I discovered that it was now occupied by a new swarm. I really cant complain...
