That "IF" is a 5% chance, but if it happens, you can do either. If you have a favorite queen you want to breed from, use her eggs, If you want to diversify your stock, buy a mated queen and introduce.

Re: First Trap-Out: started 5/30/21
What % of a colony are foragers? In 4 days, you have only caught foragers. Any house bees and developing eggs and larva are still in the column. You will have bees coming out for a MINIMUM of 5 weeks and my personal maximum is 11 weeks. I would check the eggs you put in there for queen cells between...

Re: Swarm catcher
I won't say it is 100%, but if you tilt the second box back on the bottom box and check between the frames in the second box, you will see swarm cells 99% of the time if there are any in the hive.
NO, health will not let me work hives any more, so I just teach and help others.

Re: First swarm catch 4/25/21
Bees will NEVER use frames when they have open space. Leave one frame out and they will always fill that space before using any frames.

I've always heard leave them 2 weeks, but on the other hand, I have heard they will reorient after 3 days. I'm like Jacobs. I think a week would do, but it is, to me, an unnecessary maneuver.
Jacobs, how did you get 10 or more frames in a nuc box?

Re: Need advice on weak colony
With a queen and 3 or more frames of bees, I would swap places with the two hives. The returning foragers from the strong hive will come home with groceries to the weak hive and all will be well. With less than 3 frames of bees, and/or queenless, I would combine. You can swap anytime of day or night...

1.. I haven't. I learned of it after I retired from keeping.
2.. When you have multiple queen cells being built, or other signs.
3. That's why you leave it on the new hive until she has brood. Then they won't leave,

I had a call from a member today asking what to do when you suspect your hive is going to swarm. He had never heard of a swarm catcher box, so after explaining it to him, I thought I would post it here for others that may have a use for it. You mount it on the entrance of your hive when you suspect ...

The smell of aster and goldenrod honey being cured does NOT carry over into the taste after curing. Although the taste is still fairly strong, it is not even similar to the smell when curing.

Be careful Ed. Remember, Guilford County has a leash law. """The leash law in Guilford County says an animal kept on less than one acre of land must be restrained by a leash or a fence. On land larger than one acre, an animal can roam free; but it has to stay on its owner's property.&...
