Re: Lost colony.. now what?

Hi again. Went out to get more frames to freeze today and there are a bunch of bees in the hive now. I’m guessing they are from other hives, and just taking the honey. Anything I should do or just let them be? I got out the frames I needed to freeze, but they were buzzing around me the whole time.

Re: Lost colony.. now what?

Oh, and I would say there were more than a quart of dead bees, but the colony did look smaller than I expected in the cluster, so numbers may have gone down.

Re: Lost colony.. now what?

The frames are not in the garbage yet.. just in a bag. Was waiting to see what responses on here would be before I threw them away. I don't have enough freezer room to freeze them all and keep them there all winter, but I will start cycling them through for 4 days. After the 4 days, can I just store...

Lost colony.. now what?

I have a new hive/colony (got them last April). After our last couple of warm days, I noticed that there was no activity at my hive, so I investigated and found that my bees had died :( Today, I went through the entire hive to try to figure out what went wrong, and how I have a few questions for som...

Re: Failed Queen?

Finally got out to the hive today for an inspection. Didn't see the queen, but I definitely saw eggs and larvae! Lots of bees, and they were calm at first, but started to get annoyed with me, so I made it through about half of the frames. I added the super, and filled the feeder. The next time I go ...

Re: Failed Queen?

There were some queen cells that were capped, and some that were empty, but I am not sure about Royal Jelly.. not sure what that looks like. The bee population is good! There were bees on every frame. I saw evidence of the queen on May 6 when I did my last inspection (didn't see her, but did see lar...

Failed Queen?

Hi. I started at hive early April, and I just inspected and I see no evidence of the queen. No eggs, no larvae, and there are queen cells in the hive. Can someone help me figure out what to do next?
Thank you!

Re: Is this normal?

Update.. went out today to check the hive. Everything seems normal, I think. I wasn't able to spot the queen this time, but the weather wasn't cooperating so I was a bit rushed. Here are some photos I took today.

Re: Is this normal?

The outer frames were pretty empty, so I wasn't planning to add anything yet. I am feeding them with a hive-top feeder. I would appreciate someone coming to help me out if it is needed at this point. I was going to reinspect in a week or so, and see what is going on. It was hard to tell if there wer...

Re: Is this normal?

This picture was taken after I removed one of the outer frames, so there is more space in the picture than when the hive was closed. That white comb was all stuck together when I started moving the frames.

Is this normal?

I'm brand new to beekeeping, and just did my first official inspection, since the queen was released. This is what the top of the hive looks like.. is this burr comb... does it need to be removed?
Thanks

Bees and Mosquito treatment

Hi. I am starting my first hive this spring, and we usually have our yard barrier sprayed for mosquitoes every spring/summer (usually about every 4 weeks). Will this be safe for my bees? Our mosquito guy says that they have a bee friendly treatment, but I wanted to double check and make sure. Thanks!
