Australian Bees Banned By APHIS

With little public fanfare, the United States has banned the importation of honey bee queens and package bees from Australia.

Minister Counselor (Agriculture) Simon Smalley at the Australian Embassy in Washington and a spokesman for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (ASPHIS) both confirm the move made towards the end of last month.

Both say there is a “temporary suspension” of the imports, but the APHIS website has a one sentence reference that reads:

“Importation of honey bee queens and package bees from Australia is prohibited.”

Members of the International Sisterhood of Egglayers, Local 1851, are set to vote this week on a strike action against SweetBee Honey Corporation.

At issue is SweetBee’s new mandatory retirement age of two years for queen bees. The policy was announced on March 1, and drew an ominous hum of indignation from egglayers across the company’s 1200-hive operation.

New York City, Cleveland, Minneapolis, Denver…There’s no telling which city or county will be next to allow bees, beekeepers and beekeeping in backyards, on rooftops and vacant lots. But there are still a host of cities and towns and other places that haven’t seen the light. They’ve put up that NO BUZZ ZONE sign and have no intent of taking it down anytime soon.

As beekeepers, honey packers, and importers our challenges seem to grow faster than we can produce honey. The ever-evolving and complex schemes devised to enter honey into our market without paying the U.S. antidumping duty on Chinese honey imports is mind-boggling, to say the least. Our attempt in this article is to shed additional light on the subject, so we are better able to fight this very real threat to our future in the bee business.

2009 Has the Worst Honey Crop on Record

Each October Bee Culture magazine surveys our 100 or so regular honey producer/reporters from all parts of the U.S. By October 10 or so much of the U.S. crop has been harvested, and beekeepers have a pretty good feel for what they will be making, even if some is still in the field. These reporters also subjectively (but with years of experience behind them) rank their crop with values ranging from 1 – very good, to 5 – very bad. (What is very good for a beekeeper in Ohio may be nearly a crop failure for a beekeeper in Florida – it depends on how each runs their business.)

Bee Supply Companies have for years sold a hive stand that had a slanted landing board. When asked why slanted, and why that particular slant, the answer has always been, that’s the way it’s always been. Perhaps there is a better reason.
