Sorry for the late post. Well as with many topics in beekeeping, there is no one answer. Most beekeepers use one deep and a shallow for their brood chamber. Some will run double deeps, but this seems to be overkill for the Piedmont Triad area of NC. It is recommended to allow the bees 40 lbs of hone...

Hi Beth: It was great to see you at the meeting the other night. No intentions of scaring you off, but wanted an update from the state inspectors. They see so much more than any one of us do, so it is good to hear their perspective. You will need to be concerned about the mites and treating after yo...

Extracting Honey

Hello everyone! This has not been my best season yet, but I thought I would give an update anyway. Out of the 18 hives that I have, 12 of them should have produced honey. Due to some poor queens I did not see what I had hoped for. Just the same, I extracted about 300 lbs last Saturday. I took off ab...

:) Sorry for the late post! Well your friend was right in encouraging you to add supers. As I am not sure exactly where you are it is difficult to give specifics for your area, but sounds like you have caught the tail end of the flow. The first hive sounds very strong and you will need to monitor ev...

Well folks; I dont know about you but I am not having the best year. The honey just isnt coming in the way I think it should be. I am not seeing significant swarming tendencies and have only heard of about a half dozen swarms captured.
Let us know if you are experiencing otherwise.

You are right! The bees are fascinating to watch. Dont make the same mistake as I did and go into them too often. I think the first year I had hives; I was in them every chance I had. They survived, no thanks to me! I now have 16 hives. It is really easy to get carried away. Sounds like they are doi...

Got some action!

 Hey Kurt! Good news! There are obvious signs of the honeyflow in the Peidmont Triad area. Went into some of my hives that I had supered up and the girls are already bringing in the good stuff. Also heard from Emerson Heatherly that 1 swarm was reported in Greensboro this past weekend. Not sur...

Honey flow or swarming?

:?: I know that this weather is keeping the bees inside but I thought I would ask anyway.
Any signs of the honey flow or swarming?
