Tomorrow will be 14 days since the cutout. I am thinking of checking for larva and brood in the new hive body tomorrow. Is it a good time to do that? I want to try grafting this year using this hive.

We completed the cutout Saturday. They have settled in the new home, busy bringing in pollen today.

Waiting to do a cut-out...is this weekend still too early to do it? With the reports of drones emerging now, I would like to try and get it done this weekend.

Quick check on the hives today. I didn't spend alot of time pulling frames. Both are doing well, the queens are laying. Found eggs, larva and capped brood. Both had six frames of bees. As of last weekend, I have lost three out of five hives this year. The two remaining hives seem to be doing good. The only other problem I'm having are all of the birds making a meal off of the bees when they are flying out of the hive. I'm going to put out some bird feeders to see if that will help.

I wrapped my hives last winter and this winter also. This year I added bales of straw for a wind break. This photo was taken in November after I finished wrapping them (entrance feeders were removed). They all have an upper entrance for ventilation. Put 1/2 inch insulation under the outer cover. htt...
