Re: Help Queen is gone

Instead of using hive top feeders this time of the year this is what I did... Robbing started at my hives first week of June. Nectar/Honey stores in hives is low. I decided to set-up open feeding stations in several places around in my yard. All robbing at the hive stopped in a couple of days. This ...

Re: Honey Bees In A House

Sunday morning in the bee yard. Pete and I moved the first box home last night from the trap out (from a house) I'm doing. Removed the moving screen a little at a time to let the girls fly and marked their box with a X to help them find their way home. All of the hives are already busy this early Su...

Re: Supering for the honey flow

The open feeding is working...robbing at the hives has stopped. Refilled the jars that I set out on Wednesday morning. Set the out at 8:30 last night (Thursday, 06/09/16). I set out 3 quart jars and 1 half gallon jar of sugar water, the bees started feeding as soon as I put the jars out. At 7 am Fri...

Re: Supering for the honey flow

I set out 3 quart jars of sugar water on Tuesday and 4 quart jars of sugar water on Wednesday, both were gone in one day. Robbing started at my yard on Sunday and I to put on robber screens to stop it. I'm setting the "feeding stations" far away from the hives to try to help the robbing at the hives...

Re: Honey Bees In A House

Trap-out update: gave the hive another frame of eggs on May 21st, checked it yesterday and found two queen cells. There bees still coming from the house. Hopefully in a couple more weeks, most of the bees will be out of the house.

Sorry MarkCase I just saw your reply. The cut out was actually done on April 03rd. But if another one comes up, I will let you know.

Re: Stop Robbing Almost Immediately?

I have not had a problem with robbing in the past couple of years. But, I believe this year it is going to be a big problem. I had to close up one of hives yesterday and another one today because of robbing. I'm going to try to set-up some "feeding stations" away from the bee yard. Hoping to try and...

Re: Honey Bees In A House

Trap out was not successful in raising a new queen. Had to give them another frame of eggs, young larva. The box is full of bees and they are still coming out of the house. There were a lot of drones coming out of the house Saturday afternoon. They are bringing pollen back to the hive body I set up....

Swarm - May 14, 2016

Working with honey bees, you learn that sometimes nothing goes as planned. Had my day all planned out, but the bees had other ideas. Observed my first swarm today! God finds a way to give you what you need. Let me set this one up. On April 03, 2016 we helped the homeowner cut out an active hive from...

Re: Honey Bees In A House

I didn't see any signs of a queen cell. I've checked it a few times for queen cells since I set the box up. I guess I could have missed it. The brood that is in there should emerge this week. I'll wait a while longer.

Re: Honey Bees In A House

Checked on the trap out on Saturday. I think their queen tried to come out but got stuck in the screen. With all of the rain we've had, I think they got wet and clogged up the opening. I cleaned out the opening and bees continued coming from the house. I did not see any eggs or young larva in the bo...

Re: Honey Bees In A House

Thanks for the tip Wally. I will do that tomorrow when I go by and check on them. When we checked on the today, a lot of bees were already in the box covering the brood frame we put in yesterday. There seem to be more bees going into the box today. Plugged up some more openings they were trying to g...

Re: Honey Bees In A House

Another update on the bees in the house. After keeping a eye on them them, finally saw them carrying pollen into the house. Since a cut-out was not allowed, trying my first trap-out. Had a lot of openings to block off and not the easiest option to set-up the trap, but it seems to be working. Sally a...

Re: Cut Out April 03, 2016

Checked the cut out hive today, I have them in a 5 deep frame nuc box. The queen is doing a great job laying, great pattern, two frames of capped brood, one frame with eggs and young larva. They have started attaching the cut out come to the frames. Still have not put my eyes on the queen. These are...

Re: Swarms-4/14/16

That was my plan for tomorrow. To go ahead and move her to a new set-up and let them raise a new queen. I'm sure they may already be queen cells in the hive. Hopefully I'll catch it before it does swarm.

Should I put her in a 5 frame nuc or go ahead and put her in a 8 frame set-up?

Re: Swarms-4/14/16

Wow, busy day! My one hive that made it through the winter was making a lot of noise last evening, I hope it is not thinking of swarming. I split it a couple of weeks ago, moved the frame with swarm cells to the 5 frame nuc box. Checking both of them tomorrow. Also checking the 5 frame nuc from the ...
