When to split a hive?

When that are the signs that indicate that its time to split the hive? My hive is 2 deep boxes. Did an inspection on Sunday and noticed 3 frames in the lower box that had swarm cells on the bottom of the frames. the queen isn't Nectar bound, as the top box has some frames with eggs in it. I was info...

Re: Small group of bees at entrance all night

Hi Wally, Read your reply a little late. Move the whole hive just before sun-up this morning. Now I see why you said a little at a time. I have, what seems to be, a couple of hundred bees flying around the old location. I moved the hive across the yard, about 150 feet. this location is better for th...

Re: Small group of bees at entrance all night

Thank you for the reply. I still have a top feeder in place, and they still empty it, although not very fast. On top of the feeder is top, no inner top piece. I do have an inner top with a ventilation cut out. Should I replace the top feeder with the vented inner cover, should I use both (after I sc...

Small group of bees at entrance all night

Is it normal for a group of bees to hang out at the hive entrance all night, for a couple of nights? The overnight lowes have only gotten down to the low 60's, and the humidity goes up at night. Or, is this a sign of over-crowding, and they are getting ready to swarm soon? I have a second deep box t...

Re: Nectar flow

Thank you for that information.

Sounds like it would be a good idea to plant some tulip poplar in the yard.

Nectar flow

I read this term a lot. What does it refer to? How do you know when its happening? Is it happening now? Does it last long? Does it happen more than once in the Spring?

Thanks

I'd like to add my name to the list too. I, also, work full-time, but can cut out early, half the time.

So I installed my NUC and was disappionted in what I saw

There was hardly any capped brewed or honey. The foundations were mostly drawn out, but that was about it. I did see the queen though.

Is this anything to worry about. I'm just getting into this. Was hoping for a better start.

Re: Questions about NUC's

Are NUC's usually Medium or Deep in size? Or does it just depend on the supplier?

Thanks,

Thank you!

Questions about NUC's

Hi everyone, Who might still have some for sale? OR where is a good place to get them from. By good, I mean NUC's healthy, active queens - a reputable place? What size are they typically? 4 or 5 frames? Medium or Deep in size? Seem you have to GO to the place and get them yourself. Do they came in a...

Too late to start for this Spring?

Hi everyone,

My wife and I would like to start a bee hive, but I was wondering if it is too late to get started? Also, what is a ball park figure $$, to get started. We'll probably need everything.

We have lots of questions, as I'm sure you are used to most beginners asking.

Thanks,

Duane
