Jacobs, welcome and thanks for coming on board.

Just remember, old timers repeat constantly. Most new info comes from new sources. All have good input, if we can just get them to post.

Kurt, you stayed up to late. The kid is in Minnesota. If you can get the nuc established in the hive 60 days before the honeyflow, they can put up as much as an established hive this year. That means making sure they have adequate food and pollen to raise a full compliment of brood during the...

Making a split

I made a split last Monday. If it went well, the new hive should be capping queen cells today. If anyone wants to come down, we will go in and see if it has worked. Hopefully, we will find the old queen laying in one box, and the other will have queen cells drawn out fully and ready to cap. If you h...

I'm home now and as ornery as ever. Thanks for the concern.
Don't think I'll be robbing any 90 lb. deeps for a while, tho.

Wed. will be mostly looking. The nuc making won't be until next week. You may want to wait until then, rather than miss work. If the weather is good, come down Sat. or Sun. and we will open a couple just for the fun of it.

I made a quick split today without finding the queen. I will need to go back in after about a week, so you will have another chance then. I will be...

If it's sunny, I am still going to try to split one hive. It is too close to swarm season to wait another week. I want to split 3, but may not get them all done if it is too cool.

Welcome to the forum. If you buy a package, install them in a 5 frame box, the queen will start laying in about a week. She will increase her rate of laying as they draw comb and give her empty cells to lay in. After about 4 weeks, the first of her eggs begin emerging. Five to six weeks after instal...

You can do as above, then when you remove the deep, position it on the hive in a way for the bees to empty it.
You can also start the nuc in one side of the deep and block off the other side. That way, they have to move up to the medium immediately, rather than filling out 5 more deep frames.

The easiest way is to start with one deep and add only mediums.
After the queen is laying in the medium, place a queen excluder between her and the deep. After 24+ days, remove the deep box.
It will take most of the summer to complete.
