Re: 1/8" hardware cloth

Keith at Beez Needz keeps it for making his tops and bottoms. I would think he may sell you some if you asked him.

Hive with frames and some comb. Nuc the same. Saws. "plural" Pruning shears. lemon grass oil. Fischer's bee quick. Different size cat litter scoops. queen catchers. "plural" Camera
List of questions for asking when taking the call.

That'll get you started. I'm sure there will be others added.

No failure here, just normal nature. Try to learn why and hope for better this year. They are insects, not exactly at the top of life chain.

Too early

We saw the first flakes fall today. Way too soon for this area. Not even legally winter yet.

Re: Solstice

18 days to go. Friday, Dec. 21, 2018 at 5:23 PM will be winter solstice. As the days get longer, the queens will begin laying for spring bees. It will start in the south and move northward and increase as the days get longer and the flows begin. Just remember, most hives that starve will do so in th...

Re: Bees at the Greensboro Arboretum

WHAT?? You mean if I see 1 bee on a Sourwood tree in my yard, I can't label my honey Sourwood honey? But I thought that explained why there are several times more Sourwood honey sold than is produced. :P Yes, folks, be careful who you buy Sourwood honey from. It may be 1/1000 or less Sourw...

mildred

Mildred, the church gossip and self-appointed monitor of the church's morals, kept sticking her nose into other people's business. Several members did not approve of her activities, but feared her enough to maintain their silence and distance. She made a mistake, however, when she accused Frank, a n...

Kurt Bower may be able to give you details, but I think the club had a loaner at one time that was ended because of problems. I suggest asking him if he can say why.

Re: When to split a hive?

IF they are going to swarm, then YES, they will swarm. If you remove the swarm cells, THEY WILL STILL SWARM, and your hive will die. Either split them by removing the queen into a nuc, or leave them alone. DO NOT remove the cells.

Re: Small group of bees at entrance all night

Look at a beard as an asset, not a problem. It indicates a healthy hive that is doing well. As Jacobs said, if 8 frames are drawn and covered with bees, move the outer drawn frames up into the new box and keep feeding. Move the hive a few feet each day until it is in the new location. Move it the sa...

Re: Is this a swarm or a big ol beard?

First you said 11 days ago. Now you say 2 weeks ago. Now you also add that you had queen cells when you split. With that info, YES, it's a swarm. Collect it at your earliest opportunity and get it into another hive.

Re: Is this a swarm or a big ol beard?

My guess is, If they have an upper entrance, it's a beard.

If no upper entrance, it's a swarm.

PS. As stated, it's just a guess.

Re: Irregular comb

It is called burr comb and does no harm, but does no good either, so should be avoided if easily done.

Just center all frames tightly in the center of the box, leaving any space to the outside.

They are normally deeps, but can be made up as mediums by request. Beez Needz plans to make a few mediums within the next few weeks.
